Walking along the Via Francigena means following in the footsteps of the pilgrims who have traversed Europe since the Middle Ages to reach Rome. In our region, the Tuscan stretch offers a unique experience, winding through the heart of Camaiore, its rolling hills, and historic villages right up to the gates of Lucca.
In recent years, we have witnessed a true boom in “slow tourism”: more and more people are choosing to hit the trails to reconnect with nature, enjoy outdoor activities, and discover local traditions. These routes have become an essential point of reference for enthusiasts of all ages, highlighting the beauty of the Versilia hills and showcasing the green heart of our region.
Are you ready to set off like the pilgrims of ancient times? This September, FrancigenAmica returns—an event established in 2016 to promote the Camaiore section of the Via Francigena and the network of Camaiore Antiqua trails.
Combining nature, outdoor activities, and plenty of fun, this loop event (starting and ending in the central Piazza XXIX Maggio) offers options for all preferences and fitness levels.
A Dip into History: The Camaiore Francigena Route
Camaiore’s itinerary boasts ancient and distinguished origins: it was documented as early as 990 AD in the travel diary of Sigeric, the Archbishop of Canterbury, who recorded the 27th stage of his pilgrimage under the name “Campmaior”.
From Valdicastello to Villa Le Pianore: The Camaiore section begins near Valdicastello, weaving through picturesque villages and historic estates. It passes the grand Villa Le Pianore along a paved stone path, known since the 17th century as the “Roman road”.
The Historic Center and the Abbey: After crossing Camaiore’s medieval heart and passing the Church of San Michele, the route reaches the magnificent Abbey of Camaiore, a celebrated 8th-century Benedictine monastery.
Towards Lucca: From here, the path climbs toward the charming hamlets of Montemagno and Nocchi before continuing onward to the walls of Lucca.
