On the night of June 6 – 7, 2026, the historic center of Camaiore will once again host one of the most distinctive traditions in Tuscany: the Sawdust Carpet Night.
For those who have never experienced it, the event is unlike anything else. Throughout the night, local volunteers transform Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via XX Settembre into a long open-air artwork, creating large decorative carpets entirely from colored sawdust.
By sunrise, the streets of the town become a temporary exhibition of art, craftsmanship, and community spirit.
The tradition dates back to the nineteenth century and remains one of the most important cultural events in Camaiore, involving local associations, schools, and volunteer groups of all ages.
The 2026 Theme: “The Light Shines in the Darkness”
Each year, participants create their works around a common theme. For 2026, inspiration comes from the Gospel of John: “The light shines in the darkness.”
The theme has inspired a wide range of interpretations, touching on issues that are both spiritual and contemporary: war and peace, environmental protection, violence against women, hope, solidarity, and the relationship between humanity and nature.
Although rooted in a religious celebration, the event speaks to a wider audience through visual storytelling and shared cultural values.
Nineteen Groups, One Night of Work
This year’s edition will feature nineteen historic groups from Camaiore, each responsible for designing and creating its own section of the route.
Weeks of planning and preparation are followed by a single night of work, as volunteers carefully shape colored sawdust into detailed images and decorative patterns.
The result exists for only a few hours before the Corpus Christi procession passes through the town, making the artworks part of a tradition that is intentionally temporary.
A Living Tradition
One of the most fascinating aspects of the Sawdust Carpet Night is its ephemeral nature. The artworks are created overnight and disappear just hours later.
There are no grandstands or ticketed areas. Instead, the event relies on the participation of an entire community that continues to preserve and renew a tradition passed down through generations.
For visitors, it is also an opportunity to discover the historic center of Camaiore and experience a side of Tuscany that is deeply connected to local culture and community life.
Discovering Camaiore Beyond the Event
Events like the Sawdust Carpet Night reveal much about the character of Camaiore. Tradition, community involvement, and a strong connection to local identity are still part of everyday life here.
These qualities, together with the town’s location between the Tuscan hills and the Versilia coast, make Camaiore an increasingly attractive place not only to visit, but also to live.
