We present the story of a unique property in the Tuscan hinterland, just moments from the Versilia coast. An exclusive buen retiro, just as it was for Cesare Garboli, one of the greatest Italian essayists and literary critics of the 20th century.

A History Spanning Centuries

The apartment for sale is part of the historic Villa La Bianca complex in Vado di Camaiore. The roots of this property trace back to the 16th century, when it originated as a classic Tuscan country estate equipped with an oil mill and a watermill along the banks of the Lombrici stream.

Acquired in the early 1900s by the Garboli family, it shared the fate of many grand local estates during World War II when it was occupied by German troops, though it fortunately escaped major structural damage.

Cesare Garboli’s Refugium and the 20th-Century Literary Salon

In the 1970s, during a dark era in Italy’s history, Cesare Garboli chose to leave Rome and settle permanently in Vado. The villa became the beating heart of the era’s intellectual life—a vibrant crossroads for dinners, debates, and gatherings among leading figures of Italian culture. Natalia Ginzburg, Arnoldo Mondadori, Mario Soldati, Elsa Morante, Federico Fellini, Susanna Agnelli, Luigi Veronelli, and many others were regular guests at “that strange old house where time felt like a tangible substance.”

Passing through the property gates, this unique heritage remains tangible today: the centuries-old park, the stately villa, and the thoughts and echoes of those who lived or stayed here still linger in this historic sanctuary hidden within the quiet woods.

The Restoration Project: Historic Charm Meets Modern Revival

Today, the entire complex has been completely restored following a meticulous renovation project completed in 2008. The main villa has become a refined resort, while the adjacent historic industrial structures (the brick kiln, the rice mill, and the old oil mill) have been converted into private residences.

Only the iconic brick chimney remains as a landmark in the landscape, serving as a permanent bridge between the residential architecture and its industrial past.
