Camaiore Introduces Tourist Tax: A Step Towards Responsible Tourism

Camaiore, a charming gem of Tuscany, is about to take a significant step in its relationship with tourism. Starting June 1st, for the first time, the Tourist Tax will come into effect, a municipal decision that marks a transformative moment in managing tourist flows.

Tourism is an industry regaining momentum after the pandemic, and more destinations worldwide are introducing or increasing the Tourist Tax. On one hand, the tax is intended to help mitigate the phenomenon of overtourism, especially in large cities. On the other, it aims to become a resource for protecting the environment, preserving cultural heritage, and supporting local economies. In short, it is a step towards more responsible and sustainable tourism, aiming to preserve natural resources and improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

For a long time, Camaiore was the only municipality in the Versilia area not to apply this tax. The recent decision to introduce it reflects the Municipal Administration's desire to adapt to the times and meet the current needs of the tourism sector. The tourist tax will be applied to all types of accommodations, including hotels (hotels and campsites) and non-hotel accommodations (bed and breakfasts, guest houses, rural residences, holiday homes and apartments, hostels, and shelters).

The cost varies by accommodation type, from 50 cents for hostels and shelters to 3 euros for 5-star hotels. The tax will be charged for a maximum of 7 consecutive days in the same accommodation, encouraging those who choose to stay longer in the Camaiore area and discouraging short “hit-and-run” vacations.

If you manage a holiday home and are expecting guests for the upcoming summer season, we recommend that you inform them in your welcome email about this new development: the tax is 1.50 euros per person for guests over 14 years old, for a maximum of 7 days.
